Mini Series: Stories of Healing & Hope: Story 1

This photo carries so much more than what you see.

Almost five years ago, this was our first year of serving survivors. One evening, my two children were running through the yard with another little one whose mom had just found safety on our safe property. As the lightning bugs began to appear, she stopped in amazement.

She had never seen lightning bugs before.

Think about that for a moment.

Not because they didn't exist—but because life had never been safe enough, peaceful enough, or free enough to notice them.

That night wasn't about lightning bugs.

It was about the first glimpse of wonder after surviving.

It was about children laughing without fear.

It was about healing beginning in the simplest moments.

This is why The Hiding Place exists.

Because every survivor deserves more than just escaping abuse. They deserve the chance to experience ordinary moments that become extraordinary—running barefoot through the grass, chasing lightning bugs, hearing laughter instead of chaos, and discovering that there is still beauty waiting for them.

Sometimes healing doesn't start with a counseling session. Sometimes it starts with a child whispering,

"Look... look— lights!"
